Campaigners staged a protest at the Ministry of Justice against male prisoners who identify as transgender being housed in women’s prisons. The protest coincides with the MoJ transgender prisoner policy review. Women’s prisons are effectively mixed-sex facilities. Campaigners are calling on the MoJ to provide single-sex provision for women in prisons to ensure their safety, dignity and privacy. Campaigners are also seeking to highlight the risks to single sex spaces and to the rights of women and girls that the proposed gender recognition reform presents.
