PRESS RELEASE: First Minister and MSPs come together for Carers Week
Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, was joined by party leaders and other MSPs on Thursday 13th June for a photocall at the Scottish Parliament as part of Carers Week. The event, organised by the Carers Week partner organisations, enabled Members of the Scottish Parliament to come together to pledge their support to unpaid carers throughout Scotland.
Carers Week, which runs from Monday 10th June to Sunday 16th June 2024, is an annual campaign aiming to raise awareness about caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers so they can access much-needed support.
There are over 800,000 unpaid carers in Scotland who generate the equivalent of over £13 billion1 in health and social care costs every year. Despite this massive contribution many do not get the support they need.
The Carers Week theme for 2024 is “Putting Carers on the Map”, recognising the invaluable contributions of carers across Scotland and the rest of the UK and ensuring their voices are heard.
Richard Meade, Director, Carers Scotland said:
“Carers Week is a vital annual opportunity to ‘put carers on the map’. It is great to see the Scottish Parliament acknowledge this week and for many MSPs to join us in helping to raise awareness of the challenges that many unpaid carers face. Unpaid carers make a huge contribution to society, and it is only right that they are recognised, valued and supported as a result.”
