PRESS RELEASE:
It is a matter of political will to end homelessness in Scotland. The Homeless numbers are very high and those struggling to pay rent and those with low wages are increasing in number and we will witness a tsunami of homelessness unless a raft of measures are taken now in 2021 to stop this from happening.
It is time we had a dedicated Homelessness and Housing Minister in the Scottish Cabinet of Scottish Government to give the high prioritisation and action to protect our most vulnerable citizens. As I have said the above should have the highest priority as they are the most vulnerable of our people in Scotland. Instead in recent times we have witnessed rich Lobbyists from big Companies having meetings with Scottish Ministers that go unrecorded because hundreds of millions of pounds of our money is being handed over to greedy millionaires and land developers.
We need to engage in a massive build of 37,100 social rented homes over the course of the next term of the Scottish Parliament that are warm dry and secure to ensure that the current record high number of 27,322 homeless households who are classed as open cases can be moved on to an excellent standard of permanent social housing. In the meantime we have a record number of 14,151 homeless households stuck in temporary accommodation including 7900 children who are being damaged by this state of affairs. We must implement the Unsuitable Accommodation Order in June 2021 to ensure that all homeless people are provided with a a high standard of temporary accommodation instead of the substandard and unhealthy bed and breakfast and hotel accommodation they have to put up with at the current time. This is unacceptable. They then can then move onto permanent social housing from better temporary accommodation.
In addition the COVID-19 Pandemic
