A dramatic memorial to Scotland’s drug victims created by Scottish Artist, John Woodcock, has been recently donated to St Augustine’s. The sculpture is on display where a book of remembrance for those lost to addiction is being kept. The carved wooden sculpture, titled, “One Day At A Time” depicts Christ on the cross holing a giant syringe in his right arm. Christ is not injecting his arm but holding the syringe down in a gesture of surrendering the syringe. The sculpture features a removable face revealing a mirror behind it, symbolising that anyone can be affected by addiction. The Charity (Faces & Voices of Recovery UK ) @FAVORUK commissioned the piece from John.
Drug-related deaths in Scotland have hit record levels for the seventh year in a row, with 1,339 people dying in 2020. It is the largest number of drug-related deaths since records began in 1996 and the highest number of people dying as a result of drug misuse in Europe.
