Scottish Older People's Assembly - Developing Age-friendly Communities in Scotland
The Scottish Older People's Assembly held an Age-friendly Communities event, sponsored by Christine Grahame MSP, in The Burns Room at the Scottish Parliament, on Thursday 16th March 2023.
There are over 1,000 Age-friendly Communities across 44 countries, but none in Scotland at present. While "A Fairer Scotland for Older People" provides a framework for action, Age-friendly Communities are not mentioned. The Scottish Older People’s Assembly (SOPA) believes that by building and embedding the Age-friendly model, Scotland can become a country where people have a healthier and more active later life. The event provided an opportunity for MSPs, Older Peoples’ Champions, SOPA members and partners to meet, discuss and to hear more about our current activities in Scotland and future plans.
Age-friendly Communities
The Scottish Older People’s Assembly (SOPA) has secured funding from the Tudor Trust to develop Age-friendly Communities across Scotland. SOPA is leading on this work to stimulate local and national action to achieve better outcomes for people in and approaching later life, using the World Health Organisation (WHO) Age-friendly Communities Framework.

With an increasing proportion of the Scottish population over 65 years of age, this is an ideal time to focus on supporting healthy and active later lives. SOPA is keen to work with national and local partners and to learn from other parts of the United Kingdom to pioneer this agenda across Scotland.

With an increasing proportion of the Scottish population over 65 years of age, this is an ideal time to focus on supporting healthy and active later lives. SOPA is keen to work with national and local partners and to learn from other parts of the United Kingdom to pioneer this agenda across Scotland.

With an increasing proportion of the Scottish population over 65 years of age, this is an ideal time to focus on supporting healthy and active later lives. SOPA is keen to work with national and local partners and to learn from other parts of the United Kingdom to pioneer this agenda across Scotland.

With an increasing proportion of the Scottish population over 65 years of age, this is an ideal time to focus on supporting healthy and active later lives. SOPA is keen to work with national and local partners and to learn from other parts of the United Kingdom to pioneer this agenda across Scotland.
